This painting highlights one particular area of the Montserrat mountain range in Catalonia. Carved into these towering rock formations is a sacred monastery where the Black Madonna is enshrined. The artist was entranced by the contrast of wind rustling through pine trees against the still and commanding presence of the stones.

These rock spires felt imbued with life force; totems as testament to the guardian spirits that reside over the land.
